What is the Abigail Alliance and why should you support us?

The Abigail Alliance for Better Access to Developmental Drugs. Inc. is an advocacy organization dedicated to helping cancer patients who have run out of conventional options in their battle against cancer. The Virginia-based nonprofit was founded in 2001 by Frank Burroughs in an effort to help his daughter, Abigail. The Alliance is now working to inform the public and Capitol Hill about the importance of expanded access and compassionate use, talking with pharmaceutical companies, and formulating legislations that will open the doors further to expanded access and compassionate use.

The Alliance really began in March 2001 when 21-year old Abigail Burroughs had run out of conventional options in her battle against head and neck cancer. Her oncologist at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center urged the family to try to get one of two new, as yet unapproved, targeted drugs from the companies that were testing them. The oncologist strongly felt these drugs had a very significant chance of saving Abigail’s life.

Abigail, her family and friends lobbied the two pharmaceutical companies vigorously. Thousands of people signed petitions and wrote letters, working hard and furiously to solicit help on Capitol Hill. “With Abigail, we launched at her signal, a media effort that resulted in numerous stories in the press. As tired and weak as she was,” her father remembers, “Abigail did multiple newspaper and television interviews.”

Abigail died on June 9, 2001, just two weeks before she was to enter a long-sought-after clinical trial that had opened for a third targeted drug.
